Mil Mi-8P (HS-5)

Mikhail Milin suunnittelutoimisto alkoi vuonna 1957 kehittää seuraajaa Mil Mi-4 -helikopterille. Yksimoottorinen prototyyppi lensi ensilentonsa 24.6.1961. Vuonna 1981 Rajavartiolaitokselle hankittiin kolme Mi-8T-helikopteria, joista yksi tuhoutui vuonna 1982. Sen tilalle saatiin uusi vuonna 1983. Vuonna 1988 Rajavartiolaitoksen Mil Mi-8T -helikopterit siirtyivät ilmavoimille.

HS-5 saapui Suomeen 23.12.1978. Ensimmäiset Mil Mi-8 -helikopterit poistuivat käytöstä vuosina 1988-1989 ja viimeiset vuonna 2010. HS-11 ja HS-13 lahjoitettiin Unkarin ilmavoimille.

The design bureau of Mikhail Mil started the development of the successor of Mil Mi-4 helicopter in 1957. A single-engined prototype flew first time on June 24th 1961. The main operators - Aeroflot and Soviet armed forces - demanded a twin-engined helicopter. Since there is none suitable engine, the design bureau Isotov developed a turbine engine for helicopter. The twin-engined prototype flew first time on August 2nd 1962. The series production started in 1965 and the Mil Mi-8 is one of the most produced helicopter in the world. Mi-8P is a passenger and Mi-8T a cargo variant. The total production is over 11,000 helicopters and the production continues. The Finnish Air Force acquired four Mil Mi-8T helicopters in 1973-1974 and two Mi-8P in 1978-1979. The Border Guard acquired three Mil Mi-8T helicopters in 1981. One of them destroyed in 1982 and it substitued by a new one next year. The helicopters of the Border Guard moved to the Finnish Air Force in 1988.

HS-5 arrived to Finland on December 23rd 1978. The first Mil Mi-8 helicopters retired in 1988-1989 and the last in 2010.
