VL Pyörremyrsky

VL Pyörremyrsky on Valtion Lentokonetehtaan suunnittelema ja rakentama hävittäjälentokone. Kone syntyi tarpeesta asentaa VL Myrsky -hävittäjäkoneeseen V12-moottori. Se ei ollut mahdollista, jolloin suunniteltiin kokonaan uusi hävittäjäkone puhtaalta pöydältä. Mahdollisimman moni osa tehtiin puusta, jonka saatavuus oli sotaa käyvässä Suomessa hyvä. Tavoitteena oli Messerschmitt Bf 109G:n suorituskyky. Suomen Ilmavoimat tilasi kaksi VL Pyörremyrsky -prototyyppiä 13.4.1942. Niistä vain toinen valmistui ja sekin sotatilanteen muutosten viivästyttämänä. Kone lensi ensilentonsa vasta 21.11.1945. Koneella lennettiin 31 lentoa, viimeinen 22.7.1947. Koneen suorituskyky vastasi Messerschmitt Bf 109G-6:ta. Kone poistettiin 1.4.1953 ja määrättiin museoitavaksi. Kone entisöitiin Tampereen varikolla vuosina 1970-1972.

The VL Pyörremyrsky is a fighter designed and built by the State Aircraft Factory. The background of the VL Pyörremyrsky was a need to install V12-engine to VL Myrsky. That was not possible and therefore VL Pyörremyrsky is completely separate design and not any derivate of VL Myrsky. Wood, which was easily obtainable in Finland during the war, was used as much as possible in construction. The aim was to equal the performance of the Messerschmitt Bf 109G. The Finnish Air Force ordered two prototypes on April 13th 1942. Only one of them completed after delaying due to the changes of the war. VL Pyörremyrsky flew first time on November 21st 1945. Only 31 flights were flown before the last flight on July 22nd 1947. The performance of the VL Pyörremyrsky was equal to the Messerschmitt Bf 109G-6. The aircraft was written off on April 1st 1953 in order to be stored for a future museum. The aircraft was restored at the Tampere depot 1970-1972.
