Fokker D.XXI (FR-110)

Fokker-lentokonetehdas sai toukokuussa 1934 tarjouspyynnön Hollannin siirtomaaministeriöltä, joka johti kahteen suunnitteluprojektiin, joista toisen lopputuloksena syntyi yksipaikkainen alatasoinen Fokker D.XXI -hävittäjälentokone. Siirtomaaministeriön tarpeista johtuen koneessa oli kiinteä laskuteline. Koneen prototyypin ensilento tapahtui 27.2.1936. Tällä välin Hollannin siirtomaaministeriö perui tarjouspyyntönsä ja pyysi Puolustusministeriötä ottamaan Fokker D.XXI -ohjelman hoitoonsa. Suomen Ilmavoimat kiinnostuivat koneesta ja tilasivat seitsemän konetta ja valmistuslisenssin 18.11.1936. Fokker toimitti seitsemän konetta kesällä 1937 ja Valtion Lentokonetehdas 35 konetta marraskuun 1938 ja heinäkuun 1939 välisenä aikana. Seuraaviin koneisiin jouduttiin vaihtamaan alkuperäisen Bristol Mercury -moottorin tilalle Pratt & Whitney Twin Wasp Junior -moottori. Ns. Wasp-Fokkereita valmistui lokakuun 1940 ja kesäkuun 1941 välisenä aikana 50 kpl ja vuonna 1944 vielä viisi kappaletta. Prototyypin lisäksi valmistuneista 145 Fokker D.XXI -koneesta Suomen Ilmavoimilla oli siten 97.

Fokker D.XXI muodosti talvisodassa suomalaisen hävittäjätorjunnan selkärangan. Konetyypillä saavutettiin 141 ilmavoittoa talvisodassa ja jatkosodassakin vielä 60. Konetyyppi oli käytössä Ilmasotakoulussa 13.9.1948 saakka.

Lentokone on ainoa säilynyt alkuperäinen konetyyppinsä edustaja maailmassa.

Fokker got a call for tenders from the Colonial Ministry of the Netherlands in May 1934. Fokker started two development project and the result of another project was a single-seat monoplane fighter Fokker D.XXI. The aircraft had a fixed landing gear due to the needs of the Colonial Ministry. The maiden flight was February 27th 1936. However, the Colonial Ministry cancelled the project and asked the Defence Ministry continue it. The Finnish Air Force got interested in Fokker D.XXI and ordered seven aircraft and a production licence November 18th 1936. Fokker delivered aircraft during Summer 1937 and the State Aircraft Factory 35 D.XXIs between November 1938 and July 1939. Next 50 Fokker D.XXIs were equipped with Pratt & Whtiney Twin Wasp Junior radial and they were delivered between October 1940 and June 1941. Five more D.XXIs were delivered 1944. In addition to the prototype, there were 145 Fokker D.XXIs and 97 of them operated in Finland.

The backbone of Finnish fighter force during the Winter War was comprised of Fokker D.XXI fighters. D.XXIs claimed 141 kills during the Winter War and 60 during the Continuation War. The aircraft was used in the Air Force Academy until September 13th 1948.

The aircraft is the sole original survivor of the type in the World. The aircraft is restored.
