Piper PA-31-310 Navajo OH-PRA

Piper PA-31 Navajo kehitettiin suurentamalla lentokonetehtaan edellinen kaksimoottorinen kone, Piper PA-30 Twin Comanche. Syöttöliikenteeseen, rahdin kuljetukseen ja liikelentokoneeksi tarkoitetun konetyypin prototyyppi lensi ensilentonsa 30.9.1964. Konetyyppiä rakennettiin vuoteen 1984 saakka liki 4 000 kappaletta Navajo-, Chieftain- ja Mojave-nimisinä. Suomen ilma-alusrekisterissä on ollut vuoteen 2000 mennessä peräti 35 konetyypin edustajaa - lisäksi Ilmavoimilla on ollut kuusi koneyksilöä, jotka eivät tuohon lukuun sisälly.

Rajavartiolaitokselle hankittiin kaksi Navajoa vuosina 1976 ja 1978 vartiolentokoneiksi. Vuonna 1976 hankittu OH-PRA teki pakkolaskun Liminganlahdelle 20.8.1992 polttoaineen loputtua. Vuonna 1994 koneen hylky luovutettiin opetusvälineeksi Porin teknilliselle opistolle. Se oli opetusvälineenä ainakin vuoteen 2014 saakka, jonka jälkeen se luovutettiin Länsi-Suomen Pelastusharjoitusalueelle. 28.6.2019 Rajavartiolaitos päätti poistaa OH-PRA:n ja luovuttaa sen Ilmailumuseoyhdistykselle. Koneen runko siirrettiin 16.7.2019 Porista Tikkakoskelle, jossa se varastoitiin.

The Piper PA-31 Navajo looks like enlarged PA-30 Twin Comanche. It was targeted to cargo, feeder line operations as well as to corporate market. The prototype flew first time on September 30th 1964. The aircraft type was in production until 1984 and production number was almost 4,000 aircraft. The initial name Navajo was changed later to Chieftain and the last aircraft had name Mojave. Before 2000, there were 35 Navajos in the Finnish civil aircraft register and in addition to these, the Finnish Air Force had six Chieftains.

Frontier Guard acquired two Navajos in 1976 and 1978. They served as surveillance aircraft. The first one was registered as OH-PRA. It made a forced landing at Liminganlahti near Oulu on August 20th 1992 due to lack of fuel. The wreck was handed over to Pori College of Technology in 1994 and it was used as an instructional airframe until at least 2014. After that, it was transferred to the Emergency Services Training Centre of Western Finland at Pori. Frontier Guard wrote off the OH-PRA on June 28th 2019 and handed over it to Aviation Museum Society. The fuselage of the aircraft moved from Pori to Tikkakoski on July 16th 2019 and it was stored.
