Gloster Gamecock II

Gloster Gamecock on kehitetty Gloster Grebestä. Gamecockin ensilento tapahtui helmikuussa 1925. Kuninkaalliset Ilmavoimat tilasi Glosterilta 90 Gamecock -konetta vuosina 1925-1926. Koneet palvelivat viidessä hävittäjälaivueessa. Suomen Ilmavoimat tilasi vuonna 1926 yhden Gloster Gamecock II -koneen I.V.L. D 26 Haukka I:n vertailukoneeksi. Lopulta Gloster Gamecock II voitti varsin tasapäisen vertailun VL D 27 Haukka II:n kanssa. Suomen Ilmavoimat tilasi Glosterilta 28.3.1928 yhden Gloster Gamecock III -mallikoneen ja 15 koneen valmistuslisenssin. Valtion Lentokonetehdas sai puolestaan 15 lisenssi-Glosterin tilauksen 16.11.1928. Koneet luovutettiin joulukuun 1929 ja toukokuun 1930 välisenä aikana. Suomen Ilmavoimat käytti konetta hävittäjänä vuoden 1938 loppuun saakka ja sen jälkeen koulukoneena. Viimeinen lento Gamecockilla tehtiin 22.7.1944.

Vaikka Valtion Lentokonetehtaan rakentamat koneet ovat pikemminkin versiota III, koneesta on Suomessa käytetty nimitystä Gloster Gamecock III tai VL G.28 Gamecock II.

GA-58:n hylky on ainoa säilynyt Gloster Gamecock maailmassa.

Gloster developed Gamecock from Gloster Grebe. The maiden flight of Gloster Gamecock was February 1925. The Royal Air Force ordered 90 Gamecocks from Gloster 1925-1926. Five fighter squadrons used Gamecocks. The Finnish Air Force ordered one Gloster Gamecock II to comparison aircraft for I.V.L. D 26 Haukka I. Although Gloster Gamecock II and VL D 27 Haukka II were quite equivalent, Gloster got a order of one Gloster Gamecock III pattern aircraft and a licence to build 15 Gamecocks in March 28th, 1928. The Finnish Air Force ordered 15 licence-Gamecocks from the State Aircraft Factory in November 16th, 1928. All 15 Gamecocks delivered between December 1929 and May 1930. The Finnish Air Force used Gamecocks in fighter squadrons until end of 1938 and after that Gamecock were used as advanced trainers. The last flight was July 22nd, 1944.

Although the licence-built Gamecocks are rather version III than version II, all Gamecock used in Finland were called to either Gloster Gamecock II or VL G.28 Gamecock II.

The wreck of GA-58 is the only one remained Gloster Gamecock in the World.
