Convair CV 440 Metropolitan

Convair CV 110:n prototyyppi lensi ensilentonsa 8.7.1946. Kone perustui American Airlinesin Douglas DC-3:n seuraajalle esittämiin vaatimukseen. Tarpeet kuitenkin muuttuivat ja matkustamolle vaadittiin paineistus. Convairin vastaus oli CV 240, jonka prototyyppi lensi ensilentonsa 16.3.1947. CV 240:n parannettu versio oli puolestaan CV 340, jonka prototyyppi lensi ensi kertaa 5.10.1951. CV 340:ssä oli pidempi runko, suurempi kärkiväli ja tehokkaammat moottorit. Kilpaillakseen potkuriturbiineilla varustettujen konemallien kanssa Convair kehitti CV 340:stä version, joka sai nimekseen CV 440 Metropolitan. Siinä oli virtaviivaisemmat moottorisuojukset, parannettu pakokaasujärjestelmä ja matkustamon ääneneristystä oli parannettu. Aero/Finnair hankki 1950-luvun alussa kolme Convair CV 340 -konetta, jotka muunnettiin CV 440 Metropolitaneiksi, yhden CV 340:stä muunnetun käytetyn Metropolitanin ja kolme uutta CV 440 Metripolitania. Kar-Air hankki puolestaan kaksi Metropolitan-konetta vuonna 1957 ja ne siirtyivät Finnairille 1960-luvulla. OH-LRB lensi konetyypin viimeisen lennon 30.4.1980. Maailmalla Metropolitanilla ja sen sotilasversioilla lennetään yhä.

OH-LRB:n valmistusnumero on 73. Kone tuli Aeron/Finnairin käyttöön vuonna 1953. Kone lensi tyypin viimeisen lennon Suomessa ja luovutettiin Suomen Ilmailumuseoon 4.11.1980.

The prototype of Convair CV 110 flew first time on July 8th 1946. The spesification of CV 100 was based on the requirements of the American Airliner for the successor of the Douglas DC-3. But the requirements changed and the cabin pressurisation was required. Convair designed CV 240 which flew first time on March 16th 1947. The next step was enhanced CV 340 with a longer fuselage, a wider wing span and more powerful engines. In order to compete with turboprops, Convair developed CV 440 Metropolitan, which had more steamlined engine cowlings, an enhanched exhaust system and a better soundproofing. Aero/Finnair acquired three Convair CV 340s in the beginning of the 1950s. They were converted later to the CV 440 Metropolitans. Later Finnair acquired one used converted Metropolitan and three new ones. Kar-Air acquired two new Metropolitans in 1957 and they were transferred to Finnair in the 1960s. OH-LRB flew the last flight of the type on April 30th 1980. In other countries Metropolitan and its civil version are still in use.

The serial number of OH-LRB is 73. The aircraft was delivered to Aero/Finnair in 1953. After the use, the aircraft was handed over to the Finnish Aviation Museum on Novermber 4th 1980.
