The instrument panel of the Sturmovik from the Sisu 2 movie goes to the Hallinportti Aviation Museum

The Aviation Museum Society’s Tuesday Club built aircraft cockpit instrument panels for the filming of the Finnish movies Sisu 1 and Sisu 2 (Road to Revenge). Aviation Museum Society Finland also received payment for making them.

For Sisu 1 movie we made two instrument panels. They were loosely based on the real instrument panels of the Li-2 Lisunov and the Junkers Ju 87 Stuka. However, for the Sisu 2 movie an authentic replica of an IL-2 Sturmovik instrument panel was required, and that is what we made. Admittedly, the panel itself was made of plywood, but it was weathered to look authentic. Instruments corresponding to the Soviet-era instruments used in the Sturmovik were installed in their correct positions. We borrowed these instruments from the Hallinportti Aviation Museum, which has an extensive display of instruments from aircraft used during the Second World War.

When the instrument panel was returned to us after the filming of Sisu 2, we decided not to dismantle it. We suggested to the Hallinportti Aviation Museum that we return the borrowed instruments still mounted on the panel we had built. This would allow the complete instrument panel to be displayed in the Hallinportti museum. The museum director, Seppo Valkeiskangas, liked our proposal.

To mount the Sturmovik instrument panel on a wall, a support structure was built that would allow the heavy panel to be hung securely. Information panels were also prepared to accompany it, describing the IL-2 Sturmovik, the construction of the instrument panel by the Tuesday Club, and its use in the Sisu 2 movie.

On Wednesday, 29 July, Tuesday Club members Juha Veijalainen and Reijo Siirtola headed to the Hallinportti Aviation Museum with the Sturmovik instrument panel. Seppo Valkeiskangas and Keijo Ketonen were there to meet them. They then took the panel into the museum’s exhibition building, where a place for it had already been prepared.

The fairly heavy instrument panel was lifted against the wall by several people and screwed into place. The necessary information panels were then attached beneath it. Finally, there were handshakes beside the IL-2 Sturmovik instrument panel, which was the result of cooperation between the Tuesday Club and the Hallinportti Aviation Museum.

Built by the Tuesday Club and used during the filming of Sisu 2, the Sturmovik instrument panel is a valuable and interesting addition to the already fascinating and diverse collection in the Hallinportti Aviation Museum.
